Andrew Wyeth at SAM
Tue ,28/11/2017Kerewin and I went to see the Andrew Wyeth Retrospective at SAM this past sunday afternoon. Very interesting …. here was an artist I may have heard of in passing but knew nothing about, nor any of his art. Not unlike the Yoyoy Kusama exhibit of a few months ago, a neat surprise (completely different type of art from hers – Wyeth is predominantly tempura and watercolor painting).
What’s also interesting about Wyeth is that he only lived in two places his entire life, and was painting right up until he passed away. And (some might say of course) he seems to have had a hidden obsession with one of his female models for a long period in his later years.
The exhibit has a number of great paintings but I think what I liked best were the watercolors, because they were still very detailed for that type of painting (I don’t think that’s typical) – apparently he used the same types of detail methods to paint despite using a different medium.
Definitely worth seeing, it’s there until Jan 15.

K2: Siren of the Himalayas
Thu ,02/11/2017So I’m on a bit of a mountain climbing movie kick now, for whatever weird reason, following on from the Everest Unmasked movie of mid-Oct. This time, it was the recent K2 documentary from 2009. I’ve also decided that I don’t want to watch either ‘movies’ of mountain climbing unless there’s some other aspect of the plot too (e.g James Bond flick or something) – I’d rather just work through the scary-enough truth of these crazy climbs via actual documentaries. Besides these two movies, I’ve seen Touching The Void several years ago not long after it came out.
So once again in watching this film, there were parts of the movie where I wanted to just shut it off – they are up SO high. Plus on K2, unlike others, they do a up-down style so they can survive acclimatizing to the extreme lack of oxygen and climb itself, so they go up to Camp 2, then back down, then up to Camp 3, then back to 2, and so on.
The personalities here are a bit more interesting than the two guys in Everest Unmasked, but R. Messner from that climb went on to become one of the greatest climbers of all time in the decades since (they briefly mention his summit of K2 years ago on what seems to be the most difficult possible way).
Even the drive to get them into the mountains and then long hike to base camp seem far more extreme than Everest by contrast, even though Everest is of course the highest peak on earth (K2 is #2). But they show stats early on about how much tougher and far fewer summits have been done on K2 vs. Everest.
Finally, a great counterpoint in this documentary is the story of the first summit attempt, way back in 1912, by an Italian duke. They intersperse that story with the modern one throughout the movie, makes it even more impressive for both expeditions in the end, in my opinion.
Check it out!

Insane…
Wed ,18/10/2017Anyone who knows me knows – I don’t like heights, and never have. Watching this from the comfort of terra firma is STILL wild to consider. This is the story of the first two guys to have climbed Everest without oxygen, way back in 1978. I recently read the Outside article on it, and found the short movie made at the time (Everest Unmasked), linked below.
It’s about 51 minutes, spends about 12 min giving some of the history and the middle portion details the danger, including two major Sherpa accidents that happened. The last half of the movie is the best part, especially in detailing the two climbers’ final success.
here are two more NOVA links on the topic too, including one from a person involved in the first Everest summit by Sir Edmund Hillary back in the 60’s.

The Beast is Priest….!
Sun ,20/08/2017Borrowed the Screaming for Vengeance 30th anniversary CD from the library, and there was a surprise in there – a second disc, a DVD with JP’s set from the 1983 US Festival in California.
For those of you not older than dirt, the US Festival was put on by Steve Wozinak as a ‘feel good’ massive music festival for two years in a row. It lost tons of money both years, the second year had a ‘metal day’ – added because may have been the only moneymaker, IMHO (and from reading articles about it back then) – and JP was one of the main acts, so watching this DVD was definitely a trip down memory lane (I was a sophmore in high school at the time).
So they start their set and the two guitarists come out – JP’s constantly changing drummer and bassist had to have been the source of the Spinal Tap joke about the exploding drummer – Glenn Tipton is shown chugging a Heineken just before he comes out, and KK Downing is wearing what look like female biker go-go boots – of course.
Then, as the strains of ‘The Hellion’ finish and they launch into Electric Eye, Rob Halford is heard, but not seen, quite yet. Then he marches onstage to massive cheers, and he’s wearing his ‘Goth King of the Village People’ outfit – mirrored aviators, leather and spikes ‘everything’, bullwhip, massive skull belt buckle and boots of his own. Next to these two, Glenn Tipton looks pretty tame, with only red stretch pants, open shirt and classic 80s “feathered rocker hair”.
And away they rock. Pretty good set, if what seems to be largely a set of hits only, but still pretty good, they play tight, and try to rile up the crowd, although it’s obvious that crowd is WAY too big to communicate with very much, and the stage is set back considerably from the crowd with massive security and camerapeople anyway.
Then of course near the end of the set, Rob Halford bursts through the center Marshall stack and ‘rides’ their Harley slowly onstage, revving the crap out of it. I never saw JP back in the day, only just a few years ago at White River locally, and I don’t remember them bothering with the Harley – at our show Rob Halford was too busy with costume changes anyway. 🙂 So then RH lays out on the front chopper wheel, and away they go with Hell Bent for Leather 🙂
It’s probably the perspective of time (or just getting old) but despite obvious musical talent, this is still pretty cheesy. Although the actual music video (embedded below) for ‘Breaking the Law’ is the epitome of cheese, especially when Beavis and Butthead were making fun of it (couldn’t find that sadly). But in fairness to the band, something i just read seemed to indicate they made the video somewhat tongue in cheek anyway 🙂

It’s that time of year again….
Sat ,24/06/2017…for the Greenwood Car Show! One block from our house, every year near the end of June. Interesting batch this year – lot more Corvettes than usual (although my fave ’54 of years past hasn’t been here for a few years now); the Mini group just keeps getting bigger each year somehow; good selection of oddball electric and Soviet cars; the Hawaiians normally not seen until later in July at the Shoreline VW meet were here in force this year, nearly an entire block for aircooled VWs. And a few choice Japanese cars (old and new), and a Pantera but only one Ferrari, surprisingly. And my usual gripe – *way* too many lame muscle cars (most of which now sadly are ‘classic’ too….again, argh.)
– the kids in the Jeep were cute – and I loved the ‘Jurassic Park’ Wrangler pair they had – too funny. There were many old military Jeeps this year and a couple vintage Dodge Power Wagons, too.
– also, that ‘Porsche’ seen first wasn’t in the show, that showed up later parking across from our house. When the guy pulled up in it, i asked him ‘is it real or Memorex?’ – he said ‘Memorex!’ – so not sure if this was a replica or a real one, but it was sure nice either way….!
– you can click on a pic to enlarge considerably, btw.
Enjoy!
